ABOUT FAWEGAM
THE
FORUM FOR AFRICAN WOMEN EDUCATIONALISTS (FAWE)
FAWE was
founded in 1990 following the 1990 Jonitien Declaration on
education for all by five female ministers of education
To date
the organization can boast of 46 core members in 27 African
countries.
Male
ministers of education who demonstrate a commitment to
girls’ education are eligible to be associate members of
FAWE.
The
chapters consist of professionals from all relevant sectors
- education, health, population, the media, religious and
community leaders and other individuals interested in the
promotion of girls education.
THE
GAMBIA CHAPTER FAWEGAM
Established as an NGO in 1996.
Operates
along the lines of the FAWE constitution with similar
objectives and administrative structure management of the
organization is carried out via the following organs.
The
General Assembly of 86 members.
The
Executive Committee
The
Secretariat
MISSION
OF FAWE
Fawe,
together with its partners, works at the continental,
national and local levels to create positive societal
attitudes, policies and practices that promote quality for
girls in terms of access to, retention and performance and
good quality education.
THE
VISION OF FAWEGAM
The
vision of Fawegam is that girls will grow up with capacities
to be:
Best
academic and social achievers
Confident and able to express themselves adequately
Active
participants in diagnosing and solving problems and
actualizing their ambitions.
Knowledgeable in historical culture, current events and
aware of their rights.
Physically and psychologically fit
Part of
a society at the grass-roots, national and international
levels.
RECENT
ACHIEVEMENTS
The
following are some recent achievements of Fawegam.
1066
girls sponsored from basic cycle to university
200
girls drawn from schools nationwide to address problems
affecting retention of girls in school and recommendations
drawn.
800
girls from grade 7 benefit from a full scholarship package
from September 2005 to 2009 under the ambassadors girls
scholarship package.
20 girls
in Senior Secondary and 6 girls in University benefit from
scholarship under the Chapters Higher Education Initiative.
Infrastructural development at Sambang Centre of Excellence:
Four new classrooms, toilets and resource centre.
Radio
and Television sensitization programmes on inclusive
education funded by Save the Children International
addressing the issue of integrating girls with mild
disability into mainstream education system.
HIV/Aids education incorporated in all Fawegam activities.
Mothers
club trained in production of sustainable local sanitary
pads and plastic recycling.
Mothers
club in Region 4 and 5 trained in entrepreneurial skills,
detergent production and financial management, etc.
