Hosts Fund-Raising Dinner

Women
activists and almost everyone around the globe have come
round to the view that women are indispensable forces in the
development endeavours of any nation-state. It is an
indisputable and incontrovertible truth that no nation can
attain her development objectives without the active and
constructive involvement of women in the development
process. And interestingly, many women around the world have
recognised this crucial role and are more than poised to
contribute their widow’s mite to the enhancement of
meaningful development and progress in their communities,
countries, continent and even on world-scale.
It is in
recognition of the aforesaid fact that the Gambia chapter of
Forum for African Women Educationists( FAWEGAM) recently
hosted a grand dinner at the exquisite Sun Beach Hotel in
Bakau to raise funds to build a multi-purpose centre and a
secretariat to support girls. The funds realised would be
also ploughed back to support girls’ education as well as to
ensure the comprehensive development of women and girls to
enable them make positive impact on the meaningful
development of the country.
In her
address at the dinner, Coordinator of FAWE, Yadicon Njie-Eribo,
disclosed that the organisation have hundred mother’s club
nation-wide and that the clubs consist of very strong women
who support girls’ education by providing uniforms,
stationery, materials for keeping their schools clean among
many other areas of intervention.
Deputising
for the First Lady of the Republic, Secretary of State for
Information, Neneh Macdouall-Gaye, acknowledged that the
huge turn-out that the dinner recorded was a clear
indication of people’s awareness and recognition of the
unique roles of FAWEGAM in supporting girls’ education and
furthering the cause of Gambian women.
“Over the
years, FAWEGAM has forged and continues to forge strong
links and partnership at all levels in pursuance of our
goals in improving the performance of girls and ensuring
their retention in school. I am proud to be part of a
movement that is contributing significantly towards the
achievement of a universal goal with changes felt at the
grassroots,” she posited.
