Celebrate Peacefully
Fri
day 25th January 2008

By this morning the outcome of yesterday’s local government elections would have been known to the general public. Whilst others celebrate their victory some will undoubtedly be trying to cope with the aftermath of their defeat in the hands of their opponents. But this is what every competition is about, not leaving out politics.  What matters however is the voting into office those people whom we feel can address the problems of their various constituencies. For we firmly believe that those who win at the end of the day will put at the back of their minds that public office is not meant to enrich oneself but rather to be used to address the welfare of those people who gave them that mantle of leadership. Candidates should therefore fulfill that trust bestowed on them. We would also like to appeal to the victors to celebrate in a manner that would not destroy the fine social fabric that has characterised our existence as a nation since time immemorial. For the losers, our commiserations! They should take everything in good faith and try again; it could be that one fine day they might win.

A Sigh of Relief

Following the former UN Secretary General’s (Kofi Annan) visit to Kenya, the Opposition has said that it has postponed its planned demonstration with the view of going back to the negotiation table to discuss possible solutions to the crises that followed the election of last December, which the Opposition alleged was rigged by the incumbent Mwai Kibaki.

The crises have led to over 600 people dead and thousands homeless. In this connection we once more implore both the President and the Opposition leader Raila Odinga, to look into the plight of the poor Kenyans who are paying a heavy price owing to the crises. We hope and pray that this time around, a lasting solution will be found to the crisis.
