Tuesday 9th January 2007

By Habibu Ceesay

Women’s Bureau ended Saturday a two-day consultative meeting with legal experts at the Paradise Suites Hotel in Kololi.

The meeting, organised by the Women’s Bureau in collaboration with the Office of the President, was aimed at mapping out the way forward in empowering Gambian women.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Assistant Director of the Women’s Bureau, Lamin Ceesay, thanked the Government of The Gambia for “rectifying” the law, including the CEDAW, on the empowerment of women in The Gambia.

“Women empowerment is very vital in national development,” he said, adding that women are very important in the development of a nation.

The laws on discrimination against women came at a vital time, he noted.
