'FROGS' Builds Teacher Quarters for Prince Lower Basic School
Monday 15th December 2006

The Friends of Gambian Schools (FROGS), a UK charitable organisation in The Gambia well known for providing and giving learning materials to more than 250 schools and centres in the country, on Saturday handed over a block of staff quarters to Prince  Lower Basic School in Upper Nuimi District, North Bank Region.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, the education officer and cluster monitor for the area, Mr Kawsu Sama, thanked FROGS for completing government’s efforts in its quest to develop the nation. He added that the provision of good teachers quarters is a priority to the Department of Education.

Mr Malcolm Readers, chairman of FROGS, gave an overview of the project, saying it started in 2005 when FROGS preferred 3 sponsoring school projects to bringing containers of learning materials at hefty cost.

He also thanked the E-Bay Company in UK for financing the project and applauded the community of Prince for their cooperation.

For his part, the head teacher of the school, Mr Ousman Corr, said FROGS is a true friend of his school and the community of Prince, adding that the organisation has been providing them with lots of educational materials and second hand clothing. “These quarters will not only relief my staff from any housing problem, it will also serve as security to the entire school, ”he added. He revealed that D194,600 was spent to construct the quarters.

Malick Joof, Alkalo of Prince, said: “we were about to lose staff due to housing problems but with these facilities many teachers will like to come and stay here.”

FROGS delegation also included Madam Sally Readers, secretary of the organization, and friends from the UK such as Peter and Lovian Sulway.
