Global Walk Against Child Hunger
Monday 30th April 2007

The united Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and its partners are mobilizing hundreds of thousands of people worldwide to walk together on 13 May to call for an end to child hunger. This demonstration will be focused on hungry children and the Millennium Development Goal of halving the proportion of hungry people globally by 2015.

On Sunday, 13 May 2007, more than 700,000 people in over 100 countries across 24 time zones are expected to walk five kilometers to highlight the battle against child hunger. This number includes children throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America, Some 100,000 children are expected to walk in Sub-Saharan Africa alone. Most of these are beneficiaries of WFP's innovative and hugely successful School Feeding Programme.

By Walking, these children are joining a growing chorus of voices across every demographic and every region of the world saying that it is unacceptable that 400 million children are chronically hungry in the world today.

To support the work of WFP, "Fight Hunger: Walk the World" was initiated four years ago by TNT. global provider of express, mail and logistics services. The event is the primary organizing vehicle for engage citizens globally in the struggle to achieve an end to child

hunger and meet the first Millennium Development Goal.

"Fight Hunger: Walk the World is about creating a movement to end child hunger," said Malcolm Duthie, WFP Country Representative. "By engaging citizens from rich and poor countries alike, governments worldwide will heed the call, and will do more to end child hunger. Without citizen action. the status quo will remain. But with it, we can help to end the unnecessary suffering of children."

Last year, in The Gambia specifically, over 500 people participated in a 5km walk in Banjul, to indicate their concern for tackling the problem of world wide hunger. They raised over D 90,000 for WFP's school feeding project in the Gambia; This year we will gather with friends, family, colleagues and members of the community to Walk the World again on Sunday, 13th May 2007 at 10:00am at July 22"' square (Banjul); Basse, Soma and Brikama respectively. This year's focus is to show solidarity with the global community to push for an end to child hunger and, especially show our concern for doing away with hunger in The Gambia. Our call will urge policy-makers and governments - whether in rich or poor countries - to focus more funds and resources on ensuring children do not have to continue to suffer this terrible scourge. These people have the power to improve the lives of children.
